IEA Bioenergy Task 37 & 42 Joint Meeting in Wageningen

For the first time, Task 37 (Energy from Biogas) and Task 42 (Biorefining in a Circular Economy) held a joint meeting and symposium in Wageningen, Netherlands — bringing together around 70 participants from research, policy, and industry to explore synergies between biogas and biorefineries.

Over two days, 11 insightful presentations sparked lively discussions on innovation, circular bioeconomy strategies, and renewable gas developments across Europe, Brazil, and Australia.

Task 37 also held its second 2025 in-person meeting, with representatives from 14 countries sharing national updates — including the Swiss Country Report, EU policy perspectives, and progress on upcoming webinars.

The group identified key action areas to unlock the full potential of biogas:

  • Sustainability of biogas systems

  • Digestate management

  • Economics and GHG abatement

  • Microbial monitoring

  • Small and community-scale biogas

  • Synergies with e-fuel production

💡 The meeting highlighted how collaboration across research, policy, and industry continues to drive a more sustainable, circular, and bio-based future.
