A new IEA tool maps the world’s biogas potential
The IEA has been closely tracking the development of biogases for several years and recently released a first-of-its-kind global spatial analysis assessing the potential for developing biogases from today’s organic waste streams. Our latest modelling finds that nearly 900 billion cubic metres of biogases, measured in natural gas-equivalent terms, could be produced sustainably each year – enough to meet more than 20% of global natural gas demand today. More than 70% of this sustainable potential is located in emerging and developing economies, led by India and Brazil, as well as China. To help decision-makers and stakeholders assess opportunities for biogas and biomethane at the national and local level, the IEA has also launched a new interactive online map that allows users to explore these findings in greater detail.

Andion CH4 closes €24 million project financing for Mirandola Biomethane Plant
Andion CH4 Renewables (“Andion”), a European biogas developer, owner and operator, has successfully closed a €24 million project financing to fund the construction of its fully permitted biomethane production plant in Mirandola (Modena), Emilia-Romagna. The Mirandola plant, which is under construction, is being developed under Italy’s DM 2022 biomethane incentive scheme and will produce liquefied biomethane (LBG) from agricultural waste using anaerobic digestion technology. The facility will have a maximum annual production capacity of approximately 44 GWh (c. 3,000 tons of LBG) and will process more than 70,000 tons of manure-based feedstock per year under long-term supply agreements with local farmers. The project benefits from a long-term LBG offtake agreement with SOL Group, which also holds a 20% equity stake in the plant, as previously announced. Production is expected to commence in Q2 2026.
California approves first SB 1440 biogas contract with Anaergia
The contract between Southwest Gas and the Anaergia-owned co-digestion facility was approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and will count toward renewable natural gas procurement goals set in 2022. The Anaergia project is a co-digestion facility processing wastewater and organic waste at the Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority. It can handle up to 104,000 tons of diverted organic waste annually. CPUC last week approved biomethane procurement targets for utilities in a bid to meet the broader goal of reducing methane and other short-lived climate pollutants 40% by the end of the decade. The agency’s decision included both short-term and medium-term goals, including a total annual procurement target of 72.8 billion cubic feet of biomethane by 2030.
MOL expands the Szarvas Biogas Plant with a biomethane unit
MOL, a leading eastern Europe oil company, is expanding the Szarvas Biogas Plant with a biomethane unit. They will inject 7 Mio m3 of biomethane into the grid. MOL Group acquired the Szarvas biogas plant in 2023. Currently, the biogas is utilized in gas engines: they produce nearly 24 GWh of green electricity annually and also provide combined heat. The plant processes more than 40,000 tons per year of waste from meat production in the region, and another 53,000 tons of residual waste (such as slurry and manure) from neighbouring livestock farms. In addition, around 18,000 tons of agricultural substrate is used as feedstock for the plant, which produces nearly 12 mio m3 of biogas. The upgrading unit will be Mol’s first biomethane plant and, at the same time, the third such facility in Hungary.
New gas pipeline through Stockholm more than doubles liquefied biogas production
St1 Biokraft, a leading Nordic biogas player, today inaugurated a new gas pipeline that connects the company’s facilities in Henriksdal (Nacka) and Gladö Kvarn (Huddinge) via Stockholm’s gas network. The new connection means that capacity to produce liquefied biogas in Huddinge has more than doubled, strengthening both the green transition and the region’s security of supply of fossil-free fuels. The Gladö Kvarn facility comprises a production unit that produces approximately 100 GWh of biogas per year and two upgrading units that can produce compressed (CBG) and liquefied (LBG) biogas, respectively. The LBG unit was completed in late summer 2023. However, the LBG upgrading unit is designed for 240 GWh, equivalent to 22 million litres of diesel. What has been missing is the grid connection from the Henriksdal facility, which can only produce CBG.
Lithuania biomethane output triples as renewable gas grid expands
Lithuania’s renewable energy sector has reached a significant milestone, with biomethane production nearly tripling over the past year. In April, 41 GWh of biomethane was supplied to the national gas transmission system, a sharp increase from the 15 GWh recorded during the same period last year. To put this into perspective, the amount produced in April alone is sufficient to meet the annual cooking gas needs of approximately 70,000 to 100,000 households.
Currently, Lithuania operates 14 biomethane plants with a combined capacity of 76 MW. Five plants are directly linked to the high-pressure gas transmission system and one plant is connected to the gas distribution grid. Eight plants deliver biomethane via specialized trucks to designated injection points, allowing producers in rural areas without pipeline access to participate in the market.
Stream BioEnergy building $94M biomethane plant in Cork port
In Ireland, Stream BioEnergy Ltd is constructing an €80m biomethane plant in Little Island, Cork. When operational in 2027, the facility will process 90,000 tons of domestic and commercial food and garden waste per year. It will reduce GHG emissions by 40,000 tCO2e/annum, while delivering more than 80GWh of renewable biomethane annually to the Irish National Grid, making it Ireland’s largest biomethane facility processing municipal food and garden waste
Divert opens Washington digester as financial backing grows
In April Divert celebrated the grand opening of the anaerobic digestion facility in Longview. It came after Divert announced a new fundraising round. The facility is designed to depackage and process up to 100,000 tons of organic waste annually at full capacity. The 66,000-square-foot facility is expected to help food waste generators meet Washington’s Organics Management Law and Portland, Oregon’s commercial food scraps diversion requirements.
Biomethane in France: 3.7 TWh Injected in the Second Quarter of 2026
As of June 30, 2026, 837 biomethane facilities were connected to the grid, with a maximum production capacity of 16.2 TWh per year, up 3% from the end of 2025. In the second quarter of 2026, the amount of biomethane injected into the grid totaled 3.7 TWh superior heating value (SHV), an 11% increase compared to the second quarter of 2025. According to SDES data, biomethane accounted for 6.9% of total gas injections into the French grid during the quarter. This share has increased significantly compared to previous quarters, driven by the seasonal decline in fossil gas consumption. However, the pace of new capacity development remains slower than in 2025. Over the first half of 2026, 34 facilities were commissioned, representing 431 GWh/year of additional capacity

New data highlights growth in biogas at U.S. dairy farms
The American Biogas Council (ABC) released new data showing continued growth in the number of biogas plants on dairy farms. Currently, 496 American dairies capture energy from their manure, using anaerobic digestion to recycle it into renewable natural gas (RNG) or renewable electricity. Nationwide, biogas systems recycle manure from approximately 2.5 million dairy cows, putting more than 16 billion gallons of manure to beneficial use every year. Biogas capture from dairy manure now totals about 84 Bcf (2.4 Bcm) annually.
Archaea Energy & Republic Services: First RNG plant
Archaea Energy, a subsidiary of bp, and Republic Services have marked the opening of the first renewable natural gas plant under their Lightning Renewables joint venture, which is slated to include roughly 40 RNG projects in total. Located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the facility captures landfill gas generated by the decomposition of waste at a Republic Services site and converts it into pipeline-quality RNG. Traditionally, RNG plants have been custom-built, but the Archaea Modular Design (AMD) allows plants to be built on skids with interchangeable components. Using a standardized modular design leads to faster builds than previous industry standards. The Fort Wayne landfill site, once in operation, is expected to process up to 6,400 scfm into RNG – enough gas to heat more than 25,000 homes annually, according to the EPA’s Landfill Gas Energy Benefits Calculator.
